½ We finally get that female role model that we have asked for. Someone who girls of all ages can look up to. Someone who can really kick ass on a big scale while protecting our world from extra-terrestrial threats. Unfortunately, that is actually one of the only things this show really nails, because their are some episodes which are just snoozefests. Many of the episodes are so incredibly boring that I actually considered to stop watch the show.
It really does a good job with its heroes and Melissa Benoist and Chyler Leigh gives some incredible performances and really plays well off each other. The villains, however, aren't really that good at all. Non is the most underdeveloped villain I have ever seen on TV and I really hope that they really up the ante in season 2. ½ A thrilling adventure series, Supergirl delivers a strong first season. After living in hiding for most of her life Krypton refugee Kara Zor-El reveals herself to the world and decides to follow in the footsteps of her cousin (Superman) and becomes a superhero; but it proves to be more difficult than she imagined, leading her to team up with a covert government agency that combats alien threats. The cast is quite impressive, particularly Melissa Benoist who does a great job at playing Kara/Supergirl; giving a nuanced performance that distinguishes her undercover and superhero identities. Also, Calista Flockhart brings a welcomed bit of comedic satire to the show that works especially well.
And there are some nice cameos, including the original Supergirl Helen Slater and a crossover with The Flash. However, the whole girl power thing gets a little out-of-hand at times and ends up hurting the character development and storytelling; especially in regards to Kara's relationship with her cousin. Surprisingly clever and fun, Season 1 of Supergirl is a promising start to a new and exciting DC series.
