Did you uninstall the Adobe Acrobat Reader 9 program? Having both versions installed may confuse Firefox causing unpredictability. If Reader 9 doesn't appear in Add / Remove Programs, type about:plugins in the URL bar and hit Enter. Note the Path to that Reader 9 plugin and delete that plugin file.
