By David Meroney - Last updated: Wednesday, June 28, 2017 - - Hello, Arkansas runners! The Road Runners Club of America held it’s 59th National Convention in Detroit on March 9-12, 2017.

Having now attended six RRCA national conventions, I must say the convention is a worthwhile experience and I wish more from Arkansas would join in as well. Arkansas has a vibrant running community and I believe we should be taking more advantage of this excellent program. There are clubs around the nation that send at least one representative every year. Some larger clubs like Memphis Track Club and Dallas Running Club even send 4 or 5 people every year.

Those clubs pay the registration and travel expenses. I suggest that every club in Arkansas at least discuss the possibility of sending a representative to the convention; put it on your board’s agenda at the next meeting. Canary Singing Cd Download more. Perhaps it’s only something that a club can afford every other year.

But some is better than none. The 2016 convention was in Dallas and I was the only Arkansas representative.

Clearly, proximity isn’t motivation enough. I’ll take the blame in that I have not adequately explained the benefits to clubs, some of which are: • Meet running people from across the nation.

Exchange ideas and network. Interact with vendors such as Leslie Jordan, RunSignUp, and more. • Attend education sessions.

Everything from race management, emergency planning, youth running programs, and to club finances and governance. There are multiple sessions held simultaneously so there are plenty of choices and more material than one person can possibly absorb. Bring this information back to Arkansas and enhance your club. • Learn about RRCA insurance and other programs. Here’s your chance to meet the people who run the insurance program, hear wild and weird stories that happen to races, and to try to stump them with questions.

This helps clubs make sure they are complying with the insurance program and are not exposed to uncovered liabilities. • Support the RRCA. Attendance to the convention and participation in the silent and live auctions are great ways to financially support the RRCA and it’s many programs which in term supports the clubs.

• Have a great time. This is truly the place for running enthusiasts. You get to see and even meet great people in the running community. I have personally met; got to ask about her fall then recovery at the 2008 Big Ten Indoor 600m championship; got autographs from and; and even got to see and hear, one of the original Navajo Code Talkers from World War II — a speaker at the 55th convention in Albuquerque. These things and more would have never happened if not for attending RRCA conventions. Treat this as a reward for hardworking club officers or board members. But it is also a benefit to the clubs — just imagine the inspiration and enthusiasm that would be brought back to the club by those who attend the convention; it’s infectious.

• National Running Awards banquet. Bear witness to the induction of Hall of Fame members and the presentation of the annual. And hopefully cheer on Arkansans who win an award. And hint, hint, we need to nominate worthy Arkansans for these awards!! 60th National Convention, Washington, D.C., April 5-8, 2018. The This will be a homecoming convention for the RRCA as the national headquarters are right there in Arlington.

Let’s see Arkansas represent next year. Make plans now; set money aside for this. The convention registration is $390 which includes all the meals, tons of swag, all the education sessions, a fun outing, attendance to the National Running Awards banquet, and more. The host hotel is the which has a special rate of $169/day for the convention.

Other are nearby as well. You can get in a little sightseeing during the convention but if you have never been to D.C. Before, I recommend adding as much time as you can afford — there is so much to do and see in the nation’s capitol.
